Library of CongressThe Library of Congress holds one of the country’s largest genealogical collections of published materials, including more than 40,000 genealogies and 100,000 histories of cities and counties.  Its collection also includes many city directories and telephone books for US cities.  Of particular interest to those researching Civil War ancestors is the Library’s collection of regimental histories of many Union and Confederate units.

The Library has many other materials that are especially useful for genealogical research.  For example, its vast collection of newspapers spans 3 centuries and includes approximately 9,000 titles.  The Library holds one of the largest collections of maps and cartographic materials in the world, including maps of military battles and campaigns.  The collection also includes many maps of local communities such as land ownership maps and the Sanborn Fire Insurance Company’s maps of 12,000 American cities and towns.
